This Thanksgiving I am counting my blessings in a much different way than years past and I am so thankful for it! You see, every Thanksgiving since I can remember, I have walked away from the dinner table either sick, bloated, or filled with “unexplainable” symptoms. This makes Thanksgiving history for me, a “not so very” thankful time – at least when referring to the food. This year, I have a new lease on Thanksgiving. I now understand my symptoms a lot better and have learned how to avoid most of the symptoms mentioned above. Even with the occasional “whoops” in my diet that sneaks in and causes me to take notice of another food I might be having trouble with at the moment, I am constantly grateful I have taken this path. It sure beats not being able to figure out which food, drink or environmental trigger could be plaguing me, as was my life before GAPS!
Some people who have Hashimotos Disease and also know they have a Leaky Gut decide to take on the GAPS Diet. But before you make that decision too quickly, please consider the check list I feel is most important when approaching this diet ahead of time so you are prepared emotionally, physically, and financially, for such a decision.
I was lying in bed a couple nights ago, thinking back to the early years of my diagnosis of Hashimotos, now many years ago. I was very much a “rebel” to the traditional medicine way of doing things so my doctors were never happy with me within my HMO. I kept asking if diet could change this disease and always got the same answer. Oh, I guess I should tell you what that answer was. I’m sure it isn’t surprising to learn that the answer was always an emphatic NO! But I couldn’t help wondering if there was a trigger, even if it was simply stress. You see, I had come off of a very emotional time in my life right before diagnosis so I knew stress could be a factor, but the ONLY factor? I had my doubts. Well, instead of going through the details of how I finally arrived at all the diet changes I am currently partaking in, I decided to see if I could explain it in a different way so each one can determine their own journey better.
I have to tell you, I still can’t believe this! I am 3 months post amalgam removal and feeling the same relief I felt right after they were removed! How this affects my Hashimotos Thyroiditis will not be known for a bit longer as I had some trouble detoxing after the removal (couldn’t afford the recommended detox regimen) and I am currently doing some detox strategies through my GAPS consultant which won’t be completed until likely the end of October. But since I have not yet done a second update on how I am feeling after the removal of the amalgams, I thought I’d post just a quick one until I can do a repeat mercury test and a full thyroid panel which can be compared to pre-removal testing.
Well, as usual, Hashimotos Thyroidits is not what most people would call a simple health issue! And it continues to amaze me every time I “get ahead”, how quickly I find I am not….really! But what doesn’t amaze me are the awesome things I find out as I go through this journey! Enter: The GAPS Diet! I’ve hinted about this diet in a post or two in the past but now I can update you as someone being in the “heart” of this diet and the challenges that are faced within the diet. What I can also tell you about, will be the pure joy I have gotten from being on this diet! It is the absolute best diet I have ever been on for many reasons, but I will take one at a time as I post more about it. First, I will begin with a rather light-hearted post today, showing you how a desperate GAPS person thinks.
Well, this time I really did it! Hashimotos Thyroiditis isn’t the only culprit in my health woes! It took a very scary few months to finally allow the thought that mercury could very well be poisoning me and even more so while eating a healthy, thyroid-friendly diet! Why now? Why worse? Well, in the spring of this year I began a diet intended to detox my body and lead me into better health. The only problem was that I didn’t take into account that I already knew I had extremely elevated mercury levels. How did I know that? Take a look at this test taken a couple years ago. I know, I know….you’re thinking to yourself, “why in the world would she not remove the mercury after she saw those results?” But, you see, removing 8 fillings is very expensive and I thought I “had time” to think about it or save for the event, not really understanding the tremendous amount of damage this issue may have been causing my health. It’s one thing to see it on paper; it’s another thing to understand what exactly the symptoms would be for something like mercury poisoning. That is, unless they presented themselves in a drastic way! And, so they did…when I began my very serious detox diet. That’s what this post will talk about.
You would think we have enough to worry about just watching the test results of our TSH and antibodies having Hashimotos Thyroiditis – but there is a “new” kid in town – and one that might be even more important to watch when you have this disease. I doubt many of us would be surprised to hear the answer but what I am talking about is gluten ingestion.
