Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause (Book Review)

Hashi BookI was so grateful to have received a copy of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause from author, Izabella Wentz! Izabella used her technical background and expertise as a pharmacist to dig at the root cause of her own thyroid problem. As a sufferer of Hashimoto’s, she was shocked at the lack of knowledge about lifestyle interventions for Hashimoto’s and autoimmune conditions in the world of conventional medicine. Her mission became to not only help her own thyroid condition, but if successful, to deliver this information to the thyroid community that she saw suffering with very little help from their current traditional protocols. This is what her new book is all about. I am thrilled to deliver this review to as many thyroid sufferers as possible to help get the word out that there are ways to help Hashimoto’s.

A quote from Izabella:

“Many people (including myself) have been able improve symptoms, and reduce or eliminate thyroid antibodies through lifestyle interventions, which is really exciting, because we know that the higher the antibodies the higher the risk of thyroid gland destruction and the longer they are elevated the higher the risk of developing additional autoimmune disorders.”

Considering the quote above, it is easy to understand the philosophy behind her book. Below is a more in depth video review that I recorded yesterday with a bit more information included. For those of you who have been following me for some time (there are some of you who I know from my old forum over 8 years ago!) have always heard me say that I know there is a root cause, we just need to find it. So this book is especially dear to my heart as it has the words “root cause” in the title!

First, I would like to say that in her book, Izabella Wentz did a fantastic job of leading the reader through the different aspects of having an autoimmune thyroid condition. Often this part of the journey becomes overwhelming for most of us and this book helps piece these different aspects together in a way which gives the reader the “gift” of learning how to sort through these aspects with greater ease than other technical books I’ve read. It’s taken me literally years to put all this together for myself and even though I have come so far, Izabella has been able to put together a book that has made it easy for me to figure out where my current blind spots are and helps me fill in more details on areas I have already begun to explore. Knowing Izabella is a Pharmacist, I was very concerned I would not understand the maze of technical terms she likely would be using. However, I was pleased to find out that I was able to follow her thought process without feeling overwhelmed by her background.

Here’s just some of the areas she covers in detail:

  • Basic Thyroid Knowledge
  • Restoring Thyroid Hormone Levels
  • What is an Autoimmune Condition?
  • Finding your Root Cause
  • Digestion & Depletions
  • Iodine Controversy
  • Inflammation
  • Infections
  • Immune Imbalance
  • Gut
  • Alkaline Phosphatase
  • Adrenals
  • Triggers
  • Intolerances
  • Toxins
  • Getting Better
  • Diet for Hashimoto’s
  • Supplements
  • Testing

If this weren’t enough in this book of almost 400 pages, Izabella inserts helpful diagrams and charts along the way which was a fantastic perk for someone like me! I was actually shocked at the size of the book and at first I was intimidated. But I found that the information flowed so well, I was through the book quicker than most I’ve read on these types of subjects. Usually I get stuck at difficult to understand medical language. I appreciated the way she was able to bridge the gap between the patient and the professional in this book.

Regarding the charts, I give you some glances in the video review. In the charts throughout the book she has medication comparisons (which I absolutely loved) and how to know which foods are goitergenic and how they affect the thyroid as well as many, many, other charts to help you along. She also includes self tests to help you determine if you have adrenal fatigue, intestinal permeability, and more.

Of particular value to me was the way she walks the reader through the maze of diets out there claiming to be helpful for Hashimoto’s Disease. If I would have had this information a few years ago, I would have been further along in my healing by now. But the good news is that YOU have this opportunity to get ahead now thanks to Izabella’s hard work in this book. You can find Izabella’s blog at www.thyroidrootcause.org or her website at www.thyroidlifestyle.com

So grab a copy of this book today and get started on learning where you are in your healing journey and how to best continue on your road to health.

Update: GREAT NEWS! This book is now available in eBook form! You can get that by either clicking the side bar links or just click here! This is great for those of you who need immediate help and haven’t been able to get the book yet. I am convinced this book will help you on your journey to healing! It is helping me right where I am, but would have been even more helpful at the beginning of my healing journey.

I felt the need to record this video to expound on this review. I hope you find it helpful. Please forgive the backwards letters on the book – by the time I finished recording, I realized I needed to change the orientation. You learn as you go I guess when attempting new things. 🙂
